SOCIETY OF ARTS FOR SCOTLAND.
The Society for promoting the Useful Arts in Scotland propose the following subjects for premiums, and will confer Honorary Medals on the successful competitors. The competition is open to the natives of all countries, excepting when otherwise specified.
IN THE MECHANICAL DEPARTMENT.
1. For the most important discovery in Mechanics, during the season 1823— 1824— The Keith Gold Medal.
2. For the best set of experiments on any branch of Practical Mechanics— The Keith Silver Medal.
3. For the best set of experiments on the ap paratus called “ Barker’s Mill,” the tube of the Model not to be less than 4 feet high, and 4 inches diameter. The account to specify the quantity of water expended in each experiment ; the time, the weight, and the height to which it is raised; the size and form of the apertures by which the water escapes; and generally, all circumstances affecting the results— An Honorary Medal.
4. For the most important communication of useful inventions or practices from Foreign Countries, not yet known or adopted in Britain— An Honorary Medal.
5. For the most important Mechanical Invention, applicable to Agriculture or Manufactures— An Honorary Medal.
6. For the best paper on the Selecting, Working, and Hardening of Steel, for edge and other tools, dies, springs, &c. —An Honorary Medal.
7. For the best process for making Screwing Tools, and Screwed Work, superior in point of economy or accuracy to the modes commonly in use— An Honorary Medal.
8. For the most economical mode of forming Diagrams, Plans, &c. to illustrate books of science. The Diagrams may be printed along with the text* or separately— An Honorary Medal.
9. For any important improvement in the construction of Balance, or of Pendulum Timekeepers, Artists residing in Scotland—An Honorary Medal.
10. For the best mode of correcting the secondary colours in refracting Telescopes— An Honorary Medal.
11. For the best Plan of a Cart for carrying Casks, Packages, &c. on paved Streets and Quays— An Honorary Medal.
12. For the best plan for adapting Water Wheels to the changes in the level of the streams, or tides, by which they are affected —An Honorary Medal.
